In Memoriam: Robert Stanley August

Robert Stanley August died on May 10, 2026. Robert was a dedicated supporter of NAAA and was active within the association.

Born on April 19, 1935, in Westfield, Mass., August was the son of the late Mary and Richard August. He shared his earliest years with his twin brother, the late Richard “Joe” August. The family moved to Agawam in 1941, settling at 65 Federal Street Extension. It was there that August began a life defined by hard work and achievement, serving as an Eagle Scout and a dedicated paperboy for the Springfield Daily News. A proud graduate of Agawam High School, Class of 1953, August was a standout athlete, earning letters in basketball and baseball, where he excelled at second base during his junior and senior years. He continued his education at the University of Massachusetts on an ROTC Scholarship. While at UMASS, he was an active member of the Theta Chi Fraternity, serving as Steward, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1957.

Upon graduation, August answered the call to duty, joining the U.S. Army in 1957. He rose to the rank of Captain and graduated from Flight School in 1960. A skilled aviator, he flew the L-19, L-20, and the DHC-2 Beaver. On May 4, 1958, he married the love of his life, high school sweetheart, Marilyn Wilson, with whom he shared a beautiful life until her passing.

After his military release in 1961, August’s professional journey took him to Glasgow, Ken., where he worked as a Regional Manager for Sorenson Auto Parts. In 1965, the family moved to Somers, Conn., where August began a long and illustrious career at Southern Auto Auction. His expertise and leadership in the industry were formally recognized in 1998 when he was elected to the National Auto Auction Association Hall of Fame.

August was an active member of the Somers Congregational Church, where he served as both an usher and a deacon. He was also a devoted mentor to the youth, coaching Farm League baseball for many years.

August had two great passions outside of his work: tennis and sailing.  He leaves behind a legacy of family and devotion. He is survived by his son, Todd August, and his wife, Florence; his four grandchildren, Toby, Olivia, Mary, and Tierney (Zach); and his three great-grandchildren, Desmond, Marley, and Cleo. He is also survived by his son, Trent August, and his fiancée, Lauren Cotter.

Family and friends are invited to Visitation on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 10:00 - 11:00 am at Somers Congregational Church, 599 Main St., Somers, Conn. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 am. Burial with full military honors will take place at Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, Mass.
