Opening Day at the 118th Chicago Auto Show, at McCormick Place in Chicago, Feb. 7, 2026.
Critical Shifts:
-
Pivoting Away from EV-Only Focus: CATA’s decision to drop the "Chicago Drives Electric" moniker in favor of a multi-powertrain format signals how regional dealer associations are adapting to mixed consumer demand across gas, hybrid, and electric segments.
-
Hands-On Comparison Sells Vehicles: Broadening the drive lineup allows local dealers to leverage experiential test-drive opportunities, meeting shoppers where they are and guiding them through complex powertrain choices before they walk onto dealership lots.

The Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA) is rebranding and broadening its fall consumer test-drive event. Formerly known as Chicago Drives Electric, the updated event—now named Chicago Auto Show: Behind the Wheel, presented by ComEd—will run Oct. 1-4, 2026, in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.
Reflecting broader market realities, the event is shifting from an EV-only focus to showcase a full mix of gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles side by side. Participating OEMs include Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Tesla, and VinFast.
"As the automotive industry continues to evolve, so has this event," said CATA President Jennifer Morand. "Whether you're interested in an EV, a hybrid or a traditional gas-powered vehicle, this event helps shoppers make informed decisions through hands-on experiences."
