Dealer Buy/Sell Guide: Navigating the February EV "Reset"

Dealer Buy/Sell Guide: Navigating the February EV "Reset"

The February data isn't just a report; it’s a playbook for your next auction run. With used EV inventory levels tightening and prices stabilizing, here is how to curate your lot for the spring selling season.

The "Buy" List: High Velocity & Liquidity

These units are turning faster than the industry average of 42 days and represent the safest bets for independent lots.

  • Tesla (Model 3 & Model Y): The clear market leader with a lean 35.5-day supply. Model 3s are hitting a "sweet spot" near $25,000–$27,000, making them eligible for significant consumer interest.

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5: Sales are surging, and inventory is drying up fast. With its 800V fast-charging architecture, this is the premier "non-Tesla" alternative to stock.

  • Chevrolet Equinox & Blazer EV: Chevy volume surged 70.7% recently. As off-lease units hit the lanes, these are becoming the go-to "affordable" SUVs for families.

  • Ford Mustang Mach-E: Despite heavy new inventory, used Mach-Es are moving well. Look for units priced near or below $29,000 to stay competitive.

The "Hold" List: High-Margin Luxury

Luxury buyers are less price-sensitive but more tech-focused. These units require a more "consultative" sales approach.

  • BMW iX & i4: While European nameplates saw some pullbacks, BMW remains the strongest of the German group. The iX is seeing massive depreciation from its original MSRP, creating a "shockingly affordable" luxury pitch for your customers.

  • Cadillac Lyriq: Cadillac saw a 5.0% price increase in February. Demand is high, but supply is moderate—if you can get one at MMR, there is meat on the bone.

The "Caution" List: Pricing & Inventory Risks

Watch your margins closely on these brands, as they are currently seeing rising supply or steep price drops.

  • Audi & Mercedes-Benz: These brands posted some of the steepest month-over-month price declines. Audi, in particular, was an exception to the tightening inventory trend, with days' supply actually rising.

  • Toyota & Lexus: While they have the leanest supply, they also have some of the widest price gaps compared to their gas counterparts. Ensure your local market actually supports the "Toyota Premium" for electric before buying deep.

Dealer Pro-Tip: The "Transparency" Close

In 2026, the #1 reason for used EV "lot rot" isn't the car—it's battery anxiety.

  • Action Step: Include a Battery State of Health (SoH) report in every VDP (Vehicle Description Page). Data shows that listings with explicit battery health and remaining warranty info convert significantly higher than those without.
