Indiana Harley-Davidson Dealer to Close After Nearly 50 Years

Benson Motorcycles in Muncie, Indiana, plans to close Oct. 31, with owner Phil Benson citing rising costs, shrinking margins and online competition as challenges for smaller brick-and-mortar retailers.

Benson announced the closure after operating since 1981, when Phil Benson started the business with three employees. The dealership moved into an 18,000-square-foot facility in 1986 and grew to serve motorcycle buyers through sales, parts and service.

“The reality is that it is extremely challenging for a smaller brick and mortar store to compete with rising costs, lower margins, and online shopping all cutting into the bottom line,” the dealership said in its closure announcement.

The business held a final community event on Oct. 10, thanking customers and staff for their support over the years. The closure marks the end of a longtime local motorcycle retailer as smaller specialty businesses face pressure from operating expenses and online competition.
