The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an engineering analysis into continued reports of engine failures involving General Motors’ 6.2-liter L87 V-8, expanding an earlier investigation to potentially include nearly 1 million vehicles.
The investigation follows hundreds of complaints from owners who reported engine failures even after their vehicles received repairs under GM’s 2025 recall.
The original recall, covering certain 2021-2024 GM vehicles, involved L87 engines that could experience connecting rod or crankshaft bearing failures. The remedy depended on the results of a dealer inspection, with some vehicles receiving an oil change and others receiving replacement engines.
According to NHTSA, the new investigation includes 499 complaints involving engine failures after the recall remedy. Of those, 473 involved vehicles that received the oil-change remedy, while 26 involved vehicles that had received replacement engines.
NHTSA also received 191 complaints involving L87 engines that were not included in the original recall. The expanded investigation covers a potential 997,743 vehicles.
The L87 V-8 was used in several of GM’s high-volume trucks and SUVs, including the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade.
An engineering analysis is a deeper stage of the NHTSA investigation process. The agency reviews complaints and other information to determine whether a safety-related defect exists and whether additional action, including a recall, may be necessary.
For independent dealers, the expanded investigation is significant because these vehicles are common in the used market, and the status of the engine issue and any future recall action could affect the vehicles’ retail and wholesale value.
