Consumer Sentiment Dips

Consumer Sentiment Dips

Critical Shifts:

  • Accelerated Sentiment Downturn: Consumer confidence dropped 8% in August, driven by worsening outlooks on personal finances and broader economic stability, particularly among lower-income and non-college-educated demographics.

  • Squeezed Consumer Purchasing Power: Only 8% of households expect income growth to outpace inflation over the next year—down from 18% in late 2024—forcing vehicle buyers to become increasingly price-sensitive and budget-conscious.

August's sharp drop in consumer sentiment points to continued pressure on affordability.

Consumer sentiment fell 8% in August after rising for two consecutive months, according to the University of Michigan's Survey of Consumers. The decline was broad, with consumers becoming more pessimistic about both their finances and the economy.

For independent dealers, the bigger concern is purchasing power. Only 8% of consumers now expect their income to grow faster than inflation over the next year, down from 18% in December 2024. The University of Michigan also reported that longer-term inflation expectations edged higher.

The decline was particularly pronounced among older consumers, lower-income households and people without college degrees—groups that are especially vulnerable when everyday costs continue to rise. Expected business conditions also deteriorated sharply, falling 11% for the year ahead and 17% over the longer term.

That doesn't necessarily mean consumers will stop buying vehicles. But it does suggest that more shoppers may be focused on keeping the monthly payment manageable and getting as much vehicle as possible for their money. For independent dealers, that puts affordability and value squarely back in the spotlight.

Bottom Line

The used-car customer may be getting more cautious. With consumers increasingly concerned about income keeping pace with prices, dealers should expect shoppers to scrutinize payments, prices and ownership costs even more closely. In this environment, the vehicles that offer a convincing combination of price and value could have an advantage.
