Galpin Motors is taking part in a new push to broaden vehicle subscriptions beyond electric vehicles, supplying the initial gas-powered inventory for Autonomy's expanded subscription program.
Los Angeles-based Galpin is providing Ford Mustang, Ranger, F-150, Bronco Sport, Escape and Explorer models for Autonomy's first internal-combustion-engine offering. The vehicles are initially available to customers in California.
The partnership gives Galpin another channel for placing vehicles with consumers while Autonomy attempts to broaden its subscription business beyond its original EV focus. Autonomy said it plans to add other dealer partners as the gas-powered program expands into additional markets.
The move also builds on Galpin's existing experience with vehicle subscriptions. Galpin operates a subscription program in partnership with Autonomy that offers month-to-month vehicle use, with maintenance, roadside assistance, registration and licensing included. Customers can return the vehicle at any time.
For Autonomy, adding gas vehicles represents a significant shift. The company originally built its business around EV subscriptions but is now responding to customer demand for a wider range of vehicles. CEO Fred Weick said customers are looking for more choice rather than being limited by powertrain.
"Autonomy is about giving people the freedom and flexibility to access the right vehicle for their needs," said Weick, "Our customers are telling us they want more choice and expanding the lineup enables us to serve a broader range of drivers. While EVs remain a key part of our business, adding gas-powered vehicles gives customers more options to choose what works best for their lifestyle and needs."
The expanded program comes as vehicle prices remain high and traditional vehicle ownership and financing become more difficult for some consumers. Autonomy's model allows customers to access a vehicle on a month-to-month basis rather than committing to a conventional purchase or long-term lease.
Autonomy currently operates in Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, New York, North Carolina and Washington. The company said it expects to work with additional dealers as it expands its gas-powered inventory.
Bottom Line: For Galpin, the deal puts a traditional dealer directly into the growing experiment around vehicle subscriptions — and gives the dealership another way to put new vehicles into customers' hands without a conventional sale or lease.
